Make a ringtone in three steps
- Open a song or video. The first 30 seconds are selected.
- Drag the selection to the chorus or hook, and press Preview. A 0.5 s fade in and 1.5 s fade out are already set.
- Choose M4R for iPhone or MP3 for Android and press Make ringtone.
Tips for a ringtone you’ll actually hear
- Start on a strong beat. The first two seconds are what you hear from across a room; a quiet intro gets missed.
- Make it loud. If the song is mastered quietly, run the clip through the volume booster first.
- Keep it looping cleanly. Phones repeat the ringtone. A fade out at the end stops the repeat from jolting.
Only use music you own or have rights to for personal ringtones.
Questions people ask
How long can an iPhone ringtone be?
Up to 40 seconds. iPhone rejects longer M4R files for ringtones; text and alert tones are best kept under 30 seconds. The tool starts with a 30-second selection and warns you past 40.
How do I put the M4R on my iPhone?
On a Mac, connect the iPhone, open it in Finder and drag the .m4r file onto the General tab. On Windows, use iTunes or the Apple Devices app and drag it onto Tones. Without a computer: save the MP3 version to Files, open it in GarageBand, then Share → Ringtone. Then pick it in Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone.
How do I set a custom ringtone on Android?
Export MP3 (or OGG). Copy it to the Ringtones folder on the phone, or just keep it in Downloads. Then Settings → Sound & vibration → Phone ringtone → the + or “My sounds” option, and pick the file.
Is M4R different from M4A?
Only in name. Both are AAC audio in an MP4 container. iPhone expects the .m4r extension for ringtones, so AudioKit writes the right one.
Can I make a ringtone from a video?
Yes. Open the MP4 or MOV and the tool uses its soundtrack.
