How to trim audio
- Open the file. MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC, OGG and the audio in MP4/MOV videos all work.
- Mark the part. Drag the left and right splice marks, or type exact times.
- Choose keep or cut out. Keep the selection for a clip; cut it out to remove a cough, an ad read or a mistake.
- Add fades if the clip starts or ends mid-sound, then press Preview.
- Export as MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, OGG or Opus.
Why tape editors cut at an angle
The splice marks here are slanted on purpose. When engineers edited quarter-inch tape with a razor blade, they cut on the 45° groove of a splicing block, not straight across. The angled join makes one sound crossfade into the next over a few milliseconds, which hides the click a square cut would make. AudioKit’s “cut out” mode does the digital version: a 10 ms crossfade at every join.
Cutting songs? The MP3 cutter page has MP3-specific tips.
For bigger jobs, such as removing several pauses or boosting a quiet recording, use the audio editor or remove silence. To make a phone ringtone, the ringtone maker handles the 40-second iPhone limit for you.
Questions people ask
How do I trim an MP3 online without uploading it?
Open the file above. It is decoded in your browser and drawn as a waveform. Drag the two yellow splice marks around the part you want, press Preview to check, then Export. The MP3 never leaves your device.
Can I cut a section out of the middle instead?
Yes. Switch to “Cut selection out”. Everything between the marks is removed and the two sides are joined with a 10 ms crossfade so you don’t hear a click at the join.
Does trimming an MP3 reduce quality?
Exporting re-encodes the audio. At 192 kbps or more the extra loss is inaudible for nearly everyone. If the next step is editing, export WAV or FLAC so nothing is lost at all.
How precise is the cut?
Type start and end times to the hundredth of a second, or nudge a mark with the arrow keys in 0.1-second steps (1 second with Shift). The cut itself is sample-accurate.
Can I trim audio from a video?
Yes. Drop an MP4, MOV or WEBM and AudioKit loads its audio track. The export is an audio file; the video picture is not kept.
Why add a fade?
Cutting in the middle of a sound wave makes an audible click, and a song that stops dead sounds broken. A short fade in (0.1–0.5 s) and a longer fade out (1–3 s) make any clip sound finished.
