Getting a clean recording

  • Distance: a hand’s width to a forearm’s length from the mic. Closer gets boomy and pops on “p” sounds; further picks up the room.
  • Level: watch the meter. Peaks should reach about two thirds of the height. If the hint says “too loud”, move back; it can’t be fixed afterwards.
  • The room: soft furnishings absorb echo. A wardrobe full of clothes is a surprisingly good vocal booth.
  • Afterwards: remove the pauses, normalise the loudness, or trim the start and end.

Questions people ask

Is this online voice recorder private?

Yes. The recording is captured by your browser and kept in the page’s memory. It is never uploaded. When you press Save it is encoded on your device and downloaded.

How long can I record?

There’s no set limit. An hour of recording uses around 600 MB of memory once decoded, which laptops handle easily; on phones, keep sessions under 30 minutes to be safe, and don’t lock the screen while recording.

Why does my browser ask for microphone permission?

Browsers never let a website hear your mic without permission. Allow it once for this site. You can revoke it any time from the lock icon in the address bar.

Should I turn noise suppression off?

Leave it on for speech in a normal room: it removes fan hum and keyboard noise. Turn it off for music or singing, because it can mistake sustained notes for noise and chew them up.

Does it work on iPhone?

Yes, in Safari on iOS 14.3 or later. Recording stops if you switch apps or lock the phone, so keep the tab in front.
